Perched on the hillside next to Lake Kawaguchi at the base of Mt Fuji, Hoshinoya Fuji is one of Japan's most breathtaking 'glamping' experiences. This is a wonderfully modern hotel that offers all the fun of camping whilst still providing a luxury and relaxing getaway.
HOSHINOYA Fuji is one of the newest offerings from Hoshino Resorts and is possibly one of Japan’s best-kept design hotel secrets. What you get is a five-star glamping resort set on the edge of a forested mountainside overlooking the stunning Lake Kawaguchi and Japans infamous Mt Fuji.
The 40 'cabins' at Hoshinoya Fuji have been designed as minimalist concrete cubes, with doors that slide open to reveal dramatic views of Mount Fuji through a wall of glass.
The interiors of the room are a showcase of modern Japanese design at its best: serene, natural, minimal and very white, with a cloud-like bed taking centre stage. With floor to ceiling windows, heated floors and a full-sized bathroom, they have everything you need - and are a far cry from typical camping. They also boast private balconies with a wood-fired camp stove and camping chairs.
There are two onsite restaurants: In the vaulted wooden restaurant, local chef Yuji Kanai serves his imaginative take on Japanese cuisine, from melt-in-the-mouth venison steak fresh from Mount Fuji’s slopes to boiled canola flower and squid with mustard vinegar sauce.
Diners can also eat al fresco on the Cloud Terrace which is an amazingly designed outdoor area set amongst the Pine trees. It offers a succession of overlapping timber terraces that wrap around the forest landscape and have been raised at different heights and give guests the opportunity to sit, relax and enjoy the outdoors - a rare opportunity in Japan.
HOSHINOYA Fuji is nearly hidden by the surrounding woods, located 100 meters up the slope of a mountain. The rooms of the hotel sit just high enough to give you almost uninterrupted views of Lake Kawaguchi and Mt Fuji. Some say that this side of the lake offers the best views of Mt Fuji in all of Japan.
Lake Kawaguchiko (河口湖) is probably the most easily accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes with train and direct bus connections to Tokyo running every hour. A hot spring resort town with various attractions and views of Mount Fuji is located around the lake's eastern end, while the northern shores (where the Hotel is located) is mostly undeveloped.
The hotel is a 15-minute drive from Kawaguchiko Station, which is the terminal station of the Fujikyu Railway from Otsuki, where you'll need to change trains to connect to Tokyo. The bus terminal for local buses and inter-city buses to/from Tokyo and other destinations is located just in front of the station. It will take around 2 hours to get here from Tokyo by either train or bus.
