Located on the edge of the Provence region in southern France, La Maison d’Ulysse is an old farmhouse that has been converted into a modern, boutique hotel. With its traditional vaulted ceilings, rustic stone walls and exposed timber beams, the property radiates history and charm.
The hotel occupies a renovated 16th-century mulberry farm that has been lovingly and meticulously restored by the owners Guy Toullelan and Gauthier Vandendriessche over the span of many years.
The hotel features only 9 rooms, 4 of which are generously sized suites. Each one has been personally designed and styled by the owners and they all come with beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. The attention to detail in the spotless rooms is admirable, particularly in such an old and irregular building.
The owners have scoured antique shops for vintage objects across France and Belgium, bought contemporary furniture at trade fairs, and chosen designer lights and repurposed furniture that help to preserve the property’s authentic spirit and bring it back to life without detracting from its original character.
The hotel also includes a cosy shared library with open fire, a patio and a Mediterranean garden; the swimming pool and terrace are ideal places to relax, while the cool shade of the mulberry trees and the lush oaks in the park are lovely settings for peaceful relaxation.
La Maison d'Ulysse is closed for the winter season from October until late April.
This little boutique hotel is located deep in the heart of southern France in the tiny village of Baron, at the crossroads of the Cevennes mountains, Provence and the Languedoc.
La Maison d’Ulysse is around 15-minutes by car from Uzes, an old Roman town which has the charm of Aix-en-Provence but fewer crowds. Nimes and Avignon are both less than an hour away and offer numerous sights and attractions such as the famous Palace of the Popes and countless Roman ruins.
The nearest airport to the hotel is the Montpellier–Méditerranée Airport (MPL) which is located just south of the city of Montpellier. It will take around 1 hour to get there if you are driving.
If you are coming in by train, the nearest Train hub is the Avignon TGV station which is about 45 minutes away by taxi. From Avignon TGV you can connect to Paris and London to the north and the French Riviera to the east.
